5 Supplements I’m Taking Into 2020 With Me
As the new decade starts off, I’m making sure to stay on top of my supplement game to ensure I’m at peak performance when it comes to my everyday health. While people continue to doubt if supplements are necessary for our health, I know these five supplements allow me to feel like I’m on top of the world every day.
Fish Oil
Fish oil is a go-to for me and is the first supplement I recommend for anyone who is new to the supplement world. Fish oil is extremely high in Omega-3, which is an essential fatty acid. It promotes healthy cardiovascular health and improved cognitive function. Omega-3 can be broken down into two main components to look out for. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), is the usual higher amount of fish oil and is the main property for cardiovascular health. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), is the lower amount and will be the main influencer of better cognitive function and preventing dry eyes.
My daily intake is around 1100mg of Omega 3 a day. Around 700mg of EPA, and 250 DHA.
Probiotic
My immune system is what I would like to call… sub-par. I was on too many antibiotics as a kid, which tanked my immune system pretty hard. When I started in the supplement industry in 2017, this was the first thing I picked up. I learned about the potential positives of taking the good bacteria when it came to fighting off the yearly cold. And sure enough, my once a month sickness had dwindled down to 2 to 3 times a year at most.
I stick to around 20 billion for daily use, and may up it to 50 billion during the flu and cold season.
Greens Powder
As I grow older, I have become more keen to get my veggies and fruits down, but I am still not phenomenal at getting them down at least once a day. I prefer to get my nutrients from greens powders due to the quick immediate energy my body gets from them, sometimes even better than a pick-me-up energy drink. Full of different herbs and spices and veggies that I would never fully be able to eat, let alone find in the grocery store, allow me to perform the best when it comes to fighting fatigue and giving my body what it needs.
I like to switch between GI Juice from Redcon1 or Green Vibrance from Vibrant Health.
Turmeric
Now, I was a problematic child. Not in the terms that I got in trouble a lot. More like my hospital file was probably around the same height as I am currently. Between cracking my L5, to tearing a portion of my rotator cuff on both shoulders, inflammation and I are great friends. Besides using fish oil for inflammation, I take turmeric as well.
Now turmeric has a low absorption rate, so I make sure to take around 1 gram a day. The one I take has Bioperine in it already and I make sure to eat it with some fatty acids to maximize absorption.
CBD
The newest craze of the supplement industry, I have been taking CBD every night for quite a while to help with sleep quality. I have had a lot of trouble staying asleep for quite some time since moving out on my own, but taking this at night has increased my REM sleep immensely. While the anxiety and inflammation aspects are hard to see as I take others for the inflammation, and anxiety has never been a huge issue for myself, the sleep quality improvement I’ve seen has been phenomenal.
I try to take around 25–50mg of CBD depending on the night and stress levels.
Deciding What Supplements to Take in 2020
The wonderful thing about supplements is how individualized we can get them today. The supplement scene continues to expand day by day. I recommend popping into a local store, whether it be a mom and pop shop or someplace like The Vitamin Shoppe. Talking to someone that has a solid background in the supplement industry can help you pinpoint your health needs and determine how to tackle them effectively.
